Windows 10 Technical Preview - Installing Build 9879

build 9897

As reported earlier in this blog, Microsoft released new November build for technical preview 9879 last week. By now, most of the running system should have done the build update successfully but we encounter another BSOD while upgrading. BSOD with 0xc1900101 - 0x30017 error was encountered even when we did the "slow ring" method and we expect other insider would also have the same issue.

After the system revert to the last working build (9841), we start to read around Microsoft's forum for any available solution. As we are running the Technical Preview on a Touchscreen tablet, finding someone else with a similar situation is not an easy task. We then make a concious decision to try all avenue and see which one would actually help us to update the build. Here are the methods that we tested and hopefully you guys can have a different result than us

We were directed to an article that is for windows 8.1 with the same error and we give it a go.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135 show how to boot to a "clean boot" environment before any update is done. This should also apply to windows technical preview and here how you do this.

Perform a clean boot
Open msconfig using the search function
On the Services tab of the System Configuration dialog box, tap or click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box, and then tap or click Disable all.
On the Startup tab of the System Configuration dialog box, tap or click Open Task Manager.
On the Startup tab in Task Manager, for each startup item, select the item and then click Disable.
On the Startup tab of the System Configuration dialog box, tap or click OK, and then restart the computer.
once the computer finish rebooting, reinstall the Build Update
if your update is successful, you can restore back the boot sequence back to normal
Open msconfig.
On the General tab, tap or click the Normal Startup option.
Tap or click the Services tab, clear the check box beside Hide all Microsoft services, and then tap or click Enable all.
Click the Startup tab, and then tap or click Open Task Manager.
In task manager, enable all of your startup programs, and then tap or click OK.
When you are prompted to restart the computer, tap or click Restart.

If installing from a clean boot fails, you can try to refresh the windows installation as there might be windows setting that could be the reason.

Refresh Windows installation
Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, tap Settings, and then tap Change PC settings. ...
Tap or click Update and recovery, and then tap or click Recovery.
Under Refresh your PC without affecting your files, tap or click Get started.
Follow the instructions on the screen
once you are back to the main desktop, run the installation again.

If both of the option still gave you the same error (like our installation) you can install as a fresh installation and this i can assure you would have no issue to update.

Full system installation
Please backup all your data
download the November build ISO (you can find the link from our previous post) Build 9879
Create a boot able DVD / USB and boot from it.
Install with delete all data option
Follow the instruction on the screen

Hope this article can help you to troubleshoot and to complete your update installation.
Please do comment or ask any question and we will try to help.
