Microsoft Video updated - Now support MKV

Matroska

Microsoft have started to update Xbox Video on windows 8.1 that now support Matroska Multimedia Container (MKV) natively. The latest version, would be able to support playback of most MKV video as long as Microsoft have the codec for it. This is a welcome update as user normally would need to download third party player in order to playback any MKV files.

We've tried to update our Windows 10 Video player but it is not supported yet and show us error while updating. The current Video player update would only be available for Windows 8.1 it seems. With the last announcement of supporting FLAC and now MKV, we can safely assumed which ever version available for Windows 10 would be able to play both media type out of the box.

Other notable bug fixes also documented in the Windows store Video change log that would give Video additional features such as

  • Get the latest TV shows the day after they air
  • Watch instantly in HD
  • Use customer and critic ratings when choosing programs
  • Purchases and rentals can be watched at any time on your Xbox 360, Xbox One, Windows 8/Windows RT device, Windows Phone, and on the Web from your browser
  • Find what you're looking for quickly and easily
  • Get detailed descriptions of your favorite movies and TV shows
  • Closed Captioning available for most movies and TV shows
  • Shift your viewing from PC to Xbox 360 with the touch of a button

These feature would varies depending on your location and the availability of Xbox Video in your region.

" Key updates include: MKV videos (the extension used for the Matroska Media Container) can now be played in Xbox Video. The update supports playback of most MKV files as long as they contain codecs supported by the app. Available in regions with Xbox Movies Store. To see which features are available in your region, go to the Xbox Video feature list at http://support.xbox.com/apps/windows-8/xbox-on-windows-features. "

If you own Windows 8.1, be sure to check for update and give MKV playback a try. We cant try the latest version currently so we can't say much on what MKV codec are supported for now. If you already update, maybe you can give your comment below.
